Here’s a little satirical song about the unwelcoming “welcome” some of us encounter in church.

Please share your thoughts below. And hey, please share this post with anyone you think might get a laugh. Heaven knows we can all use one.
P.S. As you can probably tell, Tom Lehrer’s music was a big influence on me. My parents had some of his albums—Songs by Tom Lehrer, More of Tom Lehrer and, of course, An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer—and I listened to them eagerly, even before I was old enough to understand them. So the way I turned out is really his fault.
Adam, Congratulations on this, Loved it. Also Congratulations on your congregation beginning the conversations to become officially Open and Affirming. I have been following the Merry Mystic for quite a while now and always look forward to getting the emails.
Thanks, Wayne. And I’m glad to know that the arrival of these Merry Mystic missives in your inbox is good news for you.
Thank you Adam for your thoughtful and inspiring words about a topic that many individuals find uncomfortable. Open and affirming, without a doubt, can mean many different ideas and I love your song about this topic. It made me laugh and then it made me sad. My dream is that we could all just be people and not identified by sexual oriention, skin color or anything that makes talk about “them verse us” a everyday discussion. We humans can make something so simple and basic into such a huge deal. Unfortunately, loving each other tends to be difficult. I appreciate your courage in addressing this topic and I believe we can make a difference by living the example that Jesus set before us.
Thanks, Susan. I think your dream there is God’s dream for us.
Thanks Adam for such a lively and affirming musical rendition of what God’s love is all about for all persons on earth! Wow, is what I want to say about your song and it brought to mind how our current church deals with the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender population. Since we have only been going to the church for five months, I do not want to pass any judgement on the beliefs of the Pastor and congregation, but I know at this time I could not bring my friend who is gay because the Pastor has talked openly how wrong it is to follow that pathway. Understand that the Biblilical doctrine supports traditional, heterosexual marriages and my own marriage relationship is heterosexual, but just the same, I wonder when I go to the final membership class, if I will be able to join because I do have three friends who are openly gay.
One question I have is: “Are children or some adults traumatized by gay/lesbian/transgender relationships? It was refreshing to listen and hear not only your song, but the additional talk you gave on this video. I feel more at ease as to whether I am being a hypocrite by having friends of the gay persuasion when practicing my faith.
